Divergent boundaries occur when two tectonic plates move away from each other, and the gap is filled with new crustal material from molten magma. Most active divergent boundaries are found between oceanic plates, forming mid-oceanic ridges such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the East Pacific Rise. Within continents, they initially produce rifts that can become rift valleys, like the East African Great Rift Valley. Complex convection within Earth's mantle brings material to the base of the lithosphere, supplying heat and reducing pressure, which melts rock from the asthenosphere and forms large flood basalt or lava flows. Each eruption fills the opening gap as the plates separate. Over millions of years, plates may move hundreds of kilometers away from the boundary, so rocks closest to the boundary are younger than those farther away.
